Basic rune abilities have Reaction. Once that lands, holding up an answer stops being guesswork.

If you come from another card game, you will tap out on your own turn out of habit. Riftbound does not ask you to: basic rune abilities have Reaction, so power can appear mid-chain, on anyone’s turn.
What that buys
It buys silence. You never have to announce that you are holding something, and your opponent cannot read your hand from your board.
